Tips For Moving To A Smaller Home After Retirement

by Eric Harrison

Are you officially out of the workforce? Is your home about to become an empty nest? If you are planning on downsizing to a smaller home in the near future to better fit your new lifestyle, you'll of course have to do a lot of planning before moving day arrives. Here are some tips to keep in mind that can help make your transition to a smaller house and your upcoming move go as smoothly as possible.

Remove the Decades of Clutter

If you've been in your current digs for decades, you likely have countless items in the basement, the attic, the spare room, and so on that you don't need or use anymore. But don't forget to take a hard look at your living space or bedroom. Do you really need all of those clothes piled into your closet? The more stuff you can donate or sell or throw away now, the less hassle you will have to deal with in the run-up to moving day.

Focus on Your New Lifestyle

Are you moving into a retirement community? Do you still have your own house but you intend to focus on a new hobby and let old ones die out? You may not need to take, say, a bicycle, if your new community has a gym included in the membership or if you can no longer physically ride the bike safely. Be mindful of your new lifestyle and make the hard choices to reduce your belongings even further.

Measure Your New Home

Get some actual measurements of your new home with a tape measure if you can or at least get them from the real estate agent or listing. You know you can't fit your current house into the new, smaller one but actual measurements will go a long way towards giving you a clearer picture of the road ahead.

Map It Out

Once you have those measurements, map it all out. How much space is the TV and stand going to take? Where are you going to put the furniture and how much room do you have for all of this? Create something akin to a blueprint so you will know exactly how much space you have and what your setup will look like before you move in. This could help you really focus on what's important to keep and what needs to go.

Creating Great Friendships During Moving

When you think about it, moving is a time when friendship abounds. In addition to having the opportunity to be close to other people, you also have the chance to really rely on one another to make things better. I began my move about a year ago by carefully organizing my things, and friend was kind enough to help me out. It was really an adventure to work together to figure things out, and when I actually moved, she helped me along the way. We retain our friendship to this day, and it has been neat to see how the distance has impacted our commitment to remain friends. Read this website to learn more about moving.
